DJ Sounds

Montreal (Apr.16.07)

Yeah, we know, you like to get down and boogie to a different beat. You go girl. And be it dance hall, house, reggae, rap or the electronic squeal of a synthesizer that gets your feet tapping and booty shaking — we’ve got the music for you. That’s right. Check out this week’s Best Of DJ sounds to know where to go for your next groove thang fix…
    DJs
  1. Best sound system for house music: Tribe Hyper Club
    390 St-Jacques W.; 514-845-3066; http://tribehyperclub.com
If you’re looking to dance to the hottest house music during normal clubbing time (not after hours) and can appreciate one of North America’s leading sound systems with over 100, 000 watts of power, then Tribe Hyper Club in Old Montreal is the place for you. From Sasha and John Digweed, to Steve Lawler and Roger Sanchez (not to mention Sander Kleinenberg and Erick Morillo), Tribe lures the world’s top-ranked electronic DJs with its state-of-the-art sound system and house-music-connoisseur crowd. (Regular hours: 10 p.m.-3 a.m.)

  2. Where to spot celebrities behind the turn tables: Time Supper Club
    997 St-Jacques W.; 514-392-9292; http://www.timesupperclub.com
Time Supper Club is Montreal’s celebrity playground. From Tommy Lee to Tara Reid, a slew of Hollywood bad boys and girls have tried their hand behind the DJ booth and danced on the red velvet couches. If popping open champagne bottles and dancing to a music mosaic, from R&B and house to the good old rock and roll tempts you, then head on over. Just be warned the doormen love their regulars.

  3. Best salsa theme nights: Moomba Supperclub
    1780 Pierre-Péladeau, Laval; 450-973-7787
Located in the Centropolis in Laval, this supper club boasts a clean zen décor and ample space for twists and twirls. It’s the perfect place to perfect that side-to-side walk you salsa students just couldn’t nail in last week’s class. And for those who want to let loose in an exotic and relaxing setting, no one is keeping track of your Latin talents.

  4. Where to discover up-and-coming DJs: Laika
    4040 St-Laurent; 514-842-8088; http://www.laikamontreal.com
Just as Mistress Barbara loved to experiment in this cozy resto/bar in Montreal’s trendy Plateau neighbourhood before she became Montreal’s hottest DJ export, so many of the city’s up-and-coming talents use it as their own personal training ground, playing to the throngs of hip, fashionable urbanites that constantly fill its tables.

  5. Where to pull an all-nighter dancing: Stereo
    858 St-Catherine E.; 514-286-0325 ; www.stereo-nightclub.com
If a 3 a.m. curfew seems like a cruel punishment for your music-loving ears, then join the uniquely diverse mix of party-goers who gathers here to listen to world-renowned DJs like Victor Calderone and Chus & Ceballos spin. Resident DJ David Morales describes this after-hours location as a musical haven. It opens at 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
