Another Sweet Pic

When caught in an omnivore dilemma, we usually side with meat. Make it meat and cheese? No contest.
And thanks to the newly opened Pic Nic Wine Bar, we’ve got both covered.
Besides its ultra-hip Leslieville location, we immediately fell for Pic Nic’s simple approach: Drink a variety of great wines by the glass, and while you’re at it, make room for a platter of 2 meats, 2 cheeses and 3 garnishes with a basket of fresh baguette (all for $20).
Seeking light and local, we started with a Peller Estates Riesling ($4/3oz) and asparagus salad with cherry tomatoes, olives and shaved ricotta ($11). Fresh, local asparagus – need we say more?
A Latitude Pinot Noir ($7.5/5 oz) came next, as did our platter - featuring marinated artichokes, deliciously lean Bresaola beef and sharp Asiago. The shavings of capicollo (spiced pork) and semi-hard Italian Montasio were soon devoured, leaving crunchy caperberries and sweet melon to clean our palette.
Whether we’re in the mood for our meat marbled or spiced, our cheese hard or semi-soft, the chalkboard has all the options. Same for garnish ideas, like gherkins, roasted red peppers and strawberry jam. (Plus there are plenty of picnic-esque meal options beyond the platter.)
For us, we’ll stick to the wine, meat and cheese and call it a picnic.
