We’re rarely excited by comebacks (Britney, did you ever really go away?) and sequels usually leave us cold (we’re looking at you, Ocean's 12). So while we’ve been waiting for Mildred’s Temple Kitchen (the new incarnation of Mildred Pierce) to arrive on the scene for a while now, we definitely had our doubts of it living up to the original.
Sure, the new Liberty Village location looked gorgeous enough—with an open kitchen, original art and huge windows overlooking the train tracks. And true, we admired the ingenious water font that serves sparkling and flat reverse osmosis water and eliminates wasteful water bottles (for only $2/person).
The poached squid salad ($9) had us intrigued. Yes, the squid tasted delicious paired with apple, cucumber and a rich yogurt dressing, but it was only an appetizer. Would the braised lamb and root vegetables potted pie ($18) taste as good as it sounded? Better, we discovered. Polishing off the delectably soft figgy bread pudding with toasted almonds ($9), we weren’t so much tasting as worshipping (thus explaining the Temple part of the name.)
And to soothe any lingering brunch worries we might have, a quick glance at the menu assured us that our favourite Mrs. Biederhof’s pancakes ($12) and green eggs and ham ($9) are still on the agenda (and our to-do list).
Come back? You bet we will.
