The Big Cheese

Nancy’s CheeseToronto (Jan.20.09)

While we like to think we have impeccable taste in everything from wine to men, when it comes to cheese we’ve admittedly gravitated to the singles, string and “its” varieties.

Upon realizing these are not actual cheese varieties, we popped into Nancy’s Cheese for some much-needed schooling. Who better to learn from than a certified member of the Cheese Education Guild, we figured (and what better way to learn than by sampling?)

From a mild and sweet Thunder Oak Fenugreek Gouda ($48.99/kilo) to the bold Quebec Peau Rouge ($72.99/kilo), we were amazed by what we found.  Each hand-picked offering represents the best of its category (which explains why the two-year-old Raw Milk Cheddar ($34.20/kilo) is light years away from our regular brand).

After our initial cheese focus, we noticed the other epicurean delights available. We quickly snapped up From These Roots Pears and Pansies jam ($7.50) and Grey County Pepperettes (29.99/ kilo), and made sure to mark our calendar for Wednesday through Saturday when Thobor’s Boulangerie Patisserie Café French baguettes (from $2.89) are served.

Best of all, because this cheese whiz adds personality to all she does, Nancy presented us with a small write-up on each cheese we bought – noting flavours, wine pairings, history and even how to store it.

So we’ll be connoisseurs in no time.
