Table 17

Table 17

After hearing about a Euro-inspired wine bar serving local-inspired cuisine and a great variety of wines by the glass in a rustic, intimate setting, we had but four words: “Save us a table.”  Make that Table 17.

Table 17 Brought to life by the former owners of Izakaya, Table 17 marks a new beginning in (where else?) the ever-expanding Leslieville hood. (The only nod to their past endeavour is the chilli beef ribs, a popular selection on both menus.)

Opening with a glass of Henry of Pelham Off-Dry Reserve Riesling ($10.50) and an appetizer of diver scallops ($14) with fresh peas, crispy guanciale and sauce béarnaise, dinner was off to a very tasty start.

With just 6 mains to choose from, including steak-frites, sliced pork tenderloin or creamy homemade pasta ($19-27), we assumed it would be a quick choice (but when all 6 make our mouths water…). We stayed with our fish theme (blame it on the heavenly scallops) and ordered the pickerel ($19). Salty, crispy skin met a light, flakey-white inside – pure joy served with sides of grilled fennel, fregola, chorizo and rosemary tomato jus.

With just enough room to enjoy dessert, we couldn’t pass-up the chocolate hazelnut valoutte ($8) and its perfect blend of light, chocolatey pudding with slivers of crunchy nuts. And, of course, there’s always space for more wine…
