Pet Adoption Agencies (because sometimes you just need to save the furballs)

Toronto (Jan.08.07)

Get in touch with your inner parent and adopt a wee furry creature to call your own. With this week's Best Of pet adoption agencies, we know where to go for cuddly kitties, loyal puppies, snuggable bunnies, friendly gerbils and more. Because every pet deserves a loving home...

  1. Fabulously friendly felines: Abbey Cat Adoption
    1077 North Service Rd. #39; 416-284-2140; www.abbeycats.org
We love these beautiful kitty cats so much we adopted one ourselves (and Ms. Trixie-Belle has been our purrfect companion ever since). With an array of furry photos, each featuring the cat or kitten's biography, this is the ideal place to pick your pal for life. Abbey Cat Adoption rescues abandoned cats needing good homes and deserving a second chance. Adoption fees: $75 (not spayed or neutered), or $150 (spayed or neutered).

  2. Cuddly kittens: Westside Story Kitten Adoption
    2700 Dufferin St. Unit 60; 416-783-4285; www.petfinder.org
Pint-sized, squirmy and downright adorable - kittens are incredibly hard to resist, especially black-eared, white-pawed Oscar, a kitten at Westside Story Kitten Adoption. We love this place because in most cases the adoption fee includes three sets of kitten vaccines, de-worming, a first time de-flea application and the cost of spaying or neutering your new kitten. Adoption fees: $275.

  3. Man's best friend: 4 Legged Love
    www.4leggedlove.com
Unlike the unknown fate of many lost or stray dogs, these precious pooches are kept until a suitable owner is found. We found Pepper, a six-month-old Sheltie with gorgeous beige and white markings, who was dropped off because her owner changed their mind. Already house trained, friendly and loves to play fetch. Need we say more? Adoption fees: $200-$300.

  4. Loving bow-wow woofs in pint-sized packages: Happy Tails Rescue
    34 Rothsay Rd.; www.happytailsrescue.ca
If a smaller breed is what you are looking for or your heart melts at the sight of a Maltese look no further than Happy Tails Rescue. This non-profit organization specializes in rescuing tiny doggies that are unwanted or neglected and placing them in caring, loving homes. Adoption fees: $200+.

  5. Furry friends of all kinds: Project Jessie
    221 Broadview Ave., Suite 101; 416-462-9541; www.projectjessie.ca
It's not just a world of dogs and cats out there. Smaller pets in the form of snuggly bunnies and adorable gerbils can be found too. Project Jessie adopts pets to fit your lifestyle. Adoption fees: Donations for a smaller animal.
