French Fries

Toronto (Mar.19.07)

The perennial sidekick to burgers and sandwiches, French fries never get enough respect. These Rodney Dangerfields of the fast food world aren’t a one-size-fits-all side dish – some tasty taters rise to the top and deserve a little recognition. With this week’s Best Of French fries roundup, you’ll be able to ditch the chicken fingers and eat deep-fried spuds as your entrée.

  1. Sweet potato: The Hope Street Cafe
    324 Lonsdale Rd.; 416-481-3411; hopestcafe.sites.toronto.com
Made from the current buzz super-food, it’s easy to rationalize a plateful of these bright orange fries. With a sweet flavour and balanced crispy/mushy texture, they’re tasty on their own and doused in sour cream.

  2. Hand cut: Las Iguanas
    513 Bloor St. W.; 416-532-3360
Fries plus Mexican restaurant equals delicious? It’s true. Frank is in the kitchen with a knife, deep fryer and a little bit of culinary magic. Add potatoes and out comes a greasy plate of Toronto’s best spud.

  3. Gourmet: Jamie Kennedy Wine Bar
    9 Church St.; 416-362-1957; www.jamiekennedy.ca
Very seldom does the frite require a dress code, but finding clean clothes is worth the poutine at the Jamie Kennedy eatery. Changing combinations of meat, cheese and sauces keep this dish interesting and unrecognizable to its peers.

  4. Big chain: Swiss Chalet
    www.swisschalet.ca
Festive specials come and go, but Swiss Chalet’s classic, soggy fries are always the favourite part of any quarter chicken dinner. We’re lucky that something so endearing to our stomachs is available city-wide.

  5. For dipping: Chippy’s
    893 Queen St. W.; 416-866-7474; www.chippys.ca
Chippy’s has turned the fashion district into the flavour district (where do we come up with this stuff?) using a classic straight-cut version of our beloved fry. The variety of dipping options, such as Curry Gravy or Peppar Mayo, enhance this potato-skin-visible basic.
