Vintage

Toronto (May.07.07)

The hidden thrill of vintage shopping isn’t discovering a new (well, old) favourite piece —it’s hunting for that one-of-a-kind item outside your familiar retail setting. And the backdrop for second-hand browsing can be as satisfying as the fashions. Enjoy our round-up of shopping spots, with this week’s Best Of vintage list…
    Hotel Restaurants
  1. Delving into the attic: Gadabout 1300 Queen St. E.; 416-463-1254; www.gadaboutvintage.com
Sorting through jam-packed dress racks, we’re reminded of digging through Grandma’s armoire. Across from well-preserved shoes, a wooden chest of mini-drawers is overflowing with cigarette cases, old postcards and other ripened knick-knacks.

  2. Scanning the auction house: Sticks & Stones Antiques
    1854 Queen St. E.; 416-699-9611; www.sticksandstones.com
A glass case running the length of this antique store displays colourful mounds of costume jewellery. From art deco to chunkier, Elizabeth Taylor-appropriate pieces, it’s hard not to leave this shop fully-accessorized.

  3. Keeping low-key in a department store: Double Take
    310 Gerrard St. E.; 416-925-6069 ext.223
Operated by the Yonge Street Mission and housed in a former grocery store, Double Take is a clean introduction for thrift store neophytes. Skirts and blouses are colour-sorted for efficient shopping, while off-season attire is even more of a bargain on the sale rack.

  4. Pampered perusing at an upscale boutique: The Cat’s Meow
    180 Avenue Rd.; 647-435-5875; www.thecatsmeowcouture.com
Stocked with couture pieces, you’re likely to find more designer labels in this petite boutique than on all of brand-name Bloor Street. Quality and the price-tag investment will ensure a life-long addition to any closet.

  5. The Wonder Years: Bungalow
    273 Augusta Ave.; 416-598-0204; www.bungalow.to
Kensington Market remains the go-to place for vintage jeans and T-shirts (the number of great shops has grown, just like the prices). Bungalow stands out for expanding their inventory to include house wares and furniture (as well as clothes), creating a retro atmosphere fit for Fred Savage.
