We’re quick to admit our love of hot and sour soup, steaming rice noodles or a creamy curry.
Turns out, so is former Gastropod chef and owner Angus An. His new Maenam doesn’t disappoint with its menu of delectable, authentic Thai cuisine (thanks in part to training with David Thompson at Europe’s only Michelin-starred Thai restaurant and wife Kate, a Thai native).
Slight adjustments - a fuchsia sign, bamboo blinds, subtle mirror decals, and new tabletops - lend a more laidback vibe to the room, providing the perfect backdrop to our (perfect) Friday night meal.
We started with the green papaya salad ($8), featuring bird’s eye chillies and the cloudy hot and sour prawn soup ($14). The pad thai ($14) is as authentic as it gets (no gooey mess here), while other standouts included the grilled hanger steak salad ($13) with ground, toasted rice on top and David Thompson’s 3 flavour lingcod ($17).
And since you can’t do Thai without some heat, we tried the green curry halibut ($16), which was the spiciest dish we’ve had since, well, ever.
Plus with lunch and the late-night scene taken care of - looks like a huge void in our food scene just got filled.
