We did a little jig when the Canada Line’s completion finally cleared up the Cambie corridor, but now there’s a second reason to celebrate: Stella’s on Cambie.
As sister spot to the original location on Commercial Drive, this Belgian resto-bar injects the neighbourhood with exactly what it needed: a cozy-chic atmosphere (check out the fireplace framed by unevenly jutting wooden planks and main dining area), a great patio area, an affordable menu (by Chef Todd Boyer), a superb beer roster with glossary (for the barley and hops-challenged), a bar none drink list and an assortment of some of the tastiest mussels around.
Though the tapas menu was impressive -- we were fans of the ginger-scented steamed edamame ($5) and shrimp and corn fritters with creole mustard sauce and chilli oil ($12) – it was the beer and cheese pairings that really brought us full-stop. The Chapeau Peach Lambic and blue cheese combination ($15) ended up high on our night’s noshing list, especially given the fact that Stella’s fromage comes from Mount Pleasant Cheese down the street.
And for those parent patrons who can’t find a babysitter on Friday night, don’t cancel date night yet – the restaurant is currently finalizing their kid-friendly menu (just don’t expect to find chicken strips).
Looks like Stella’s brought the cool to Cambie.
