Sure, we complain about getting our heels stuck in the cobblestone, but there’s no denying that Gastown is worth the trouble.
And now that The Diamond is finally here, we have even more reason to stay and drink the night away.
Opened by Mark Brand (of Boneta), Josh Pape (of Chambar) and Sophie Taverner (of The Cascade), the once -city hall is now a cocktail-bar-meets-neighbourhood bistro, with large, open windows and a cool, comfy aesthetic.
The drink list comes divided into categories like Proper, Boozy, Refreshing, Delicate and Not So Boozy, with an illustration of each glass you’ll get served (we love visual thinking).
We first toasted with the Kingston Daisy ($9): Jamaican rum mixed with raspberry syrup and lemon and The Rumble ($10), a green chartreuse, gin, blackberries, basil, apple and egg white concoction.
We then pored over the South Pacific-inspired checklist menu, complete with boxes for indicating quantities. Our favourites were the Sloping Hills pork gyoza ($5), the avocado and grapefruit salad with spot prawns ($7) and the duck and soba noodles with market veggies ($10). Other standouts were the roast chicken Vietnamese sub ($8) and the lemongrass glass noodles with fresh fish ($11).
Food like this, in an atmosphere like this? Spike heels not required.
