Lullabies might be a thing of our childhood past (unless we’re singing them to someone else), but it’s hard not to crack a nostalgic smile at the thought of “Rock-a-bye-Baby” or “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”
Luckily, film stylist-turned-boutique-owner Eliza Lau is helping us preserve the memories with Gentille Alouette, named after the famous French children’s lullaby.
With its inviting fireplace, exquisite wooden flooring and walls bearing the work of local artisans, the warm Gastown shop carries unique pieces picked out by a detail-oriented Lau.
We found dresses from Project Runway Canada contestant (and former Obakki designer) Genevieve Graham ($250-$700), who is currently customizing creations exclusively for the store’s clientele. Snootsie by Tesh Kosowan ($250-$400) is a far-from-basic local line of handbags, each one made from reworked leather and upholstery. Escargot draws inspiration from childhood closets and young imaginations, highly evident in the Jane and the Wayne ($58), a cowboy-style onesie with ruffles for la petite jolie or sans ruffles for le petit garcon. Every item in the boutique is carefully chosen, and may seem simply pretty at first glance, but is far more intricate upon second inspection.
Now this a place that makes our sartorial hearts sing.
