Donna K. of Markham, Ont. emailed us at expert@sweetspot.ca: I’m going on vacation and don’t want to take my good jewellery with me. However, I do want to accessorize while I am away. Could you suggest pieces I could bring with me for the evening?
…and our fashion expert, Kelly Millar, answered:
I think many people encounter this dilemma when traveling or going on holiday. The good news: One can still accessorize while on the move. Choose your accessories according to your outfit, but be sure to make one the main highlight. This season, the key to accessorizing is making unexpected combinations. Try these twists:
The jewellery route. Pair a jewel-toned evening clutch with a chunky cuff or layered bracelets. Or try something fun such as a whimsical necklace or ring.
The other route. Since one is not limited to jewellery: Try a bold coloured scarf to pull together an outfit. Gloves (short or elbow-length) give a polished look. A croc or stamped leather bag or boots add a splash of the exotic. Pick up a cinch belt to accentuate your waist or for fuller figures, try a skinny belt over a fine knit sweater for a lustrous look. Don't forget, pops of patent on accessories lend sophistication to any outfit.
Cherry on top. Hats are everywhere this season! Anything from a classic beret, structured caps, naval-inspired caps, chunky knits to 70's-inspired wide brimmed selections.
The cheat sheet. Here are the ingredients for one accessorized outfit: A wide glossy belt, sleekly matched with long gloves and lace-up heels.
Remember to always have fun with your accessories, but don’t to overdo it. Bon Voyage!
