It turns out that the mantra “knit one, purl two” isn’t just for grandmothers and bored housewives anymore.
Terri Potratz is knitting up a storm with Larry, a collection of statement scarves big and small and always 100% BC-made ($60-$500).
The popular Vancouver-based fashion blogger (The Conveyor Belt) started her needle-and-yarn journey when attempts to find a massively oversized scarf quickly unravelled (sorry, we couldn’t help it). An expert mother in all things knit, an educational knitting retreat and memories of summers spent in the Cariboo – where a family friend owns a beautiful alpaca farm – led to the designer’s conceptualization of Larry.
Though Potratz refers to some of her scarves as monsters, they are nothing to be afraid of. Currently, her favourite is the Adora ($500), while we’re eyeing the Ridge Shawl ($160), which serves as the perfect in-between-season accessory to go over plain white tees on cool spring nights.
All Larry scarves are made from 80% alpaca and 20% sheep’s wool, save for the Casey ($60) and the Mobius ($55) neck warmers, which are crafted from 50% alpaca and 50% sheep’s wool. This raw alpaca fleece is spun into yarn at a co-op mill on Saltspring Island before it hits Potratz’s able hands, and each of her handmade pieces is environmentally friendly.
This is one set of wool we’ll gladly pull over our eyes.
