Great Hair From Goody

girl about t.o. Toronto (Sep.17.09)

My morning hair routine usually comes down to one of two options: flat ironed or air dried (er, or cake hair powder).

So when it's time for a night out the only added variable is whether or not I can justify a professional blow out (admittedly, the answer to this is usually yes).

Luckily, Goody was in town for TIFF and offered to show me an easy alternative (emphasis on easy). Stylist Kristjan Hayden sat me down (just like he has with the cast of The Hills) and had my hair styled into a twisted side ponytail of loose curls using only hairspray, bobby pins and a flat iron.

Here are the tips I picked up:
  • Flat Iron = Curling Iron
    • Grab a small section of hair (about 2 inches) and clamp down near the base
    • Flip the iron over so hair is wrapped once and the ends are pointing in the same direction as they started
    • Run the iron slowly down the hair (but don't inch it, this causes crimping)
    • At the end, take the hot strand at wrap it around your finger once to enhance the new curl
  • Don't be afraid of a little backcombing
    • Take a section at the crown at tease (yes, tease) it a bit.
    • If it's small you'll end up with evening-looking volume, not a Dynasty disaster
  • Bobby pins go bumpy side down
    • I did not know this but it makes so much sense. They grip your head better this way
    • If using where your head curves, bend the pin to match (after all, they're easily replaceable)
  • Precision isn't always pretty
    • Keep things casual but put together by grabbing sections closest to one side, twist and pin at your nape
    • Continue pulling pieces over until you've got the opposite side pinned into a twisted low pony
  • Hairspray is more than just a musical
    • It works. Use it.
That was it! My hair was done in under 20 minutes, it lasted all night and the compliments kept coming. To make it dressier he suggested a bejeweled hairband (yep, Goody has one) or keep it casual by brushing bangs into the same direction of the pony.

Maybe I'll save some of my blowout budget.
