Jewellery or Shoes?
girl about t.o. canada
(Dec.16.09)
From the fine points of CP Style to the production pros and cons of Glee, our office conversations really run the gamut.
Including one from awhile ago that I often re-refer to with friends:
- Jewellery or Shoes?
Meaning, if you had to choose, which collection would you keep?
I think from my image that my answer is obvious.
Don't get me wrong, I love my shoes (even the ones I love to hate) but for me, nostalgia and special events are more closely tied to my jewellery box. (OK, my tangle of accessories on top of my dresser.)
When I was younger I often updated with inexpensive cuffs, chandelier earrings and the like but somewhere along the line, I started wearing almost the same things daily and I really liked the memories and moods they'd strike in me.
(Though I'll always add in some statement jewellery on outfit-appropriate days.)
Some of my personal favourites:
- My heart necklace: My mum is friends with a group of four sisters who one year melted down some old jewellery and made these hearts for each other - and for their honourary sister. The next year they made them for their daughters and I wear mine almost every day (and match my mother a few provinces away).
- Birks charm bracelet: This belonged to my grandmother and has a disc for each of her children. Names on one side, birth date on the other and though I first started wearing it because I liked the look that was both a bit chunky and delicate, I also am truly a sentimentalist.
- Trollbeads charm bracelet: My parents gave this to me a couple of years ago and have added some since. The coloured glass reminds me of the sea glass I collected as a kid, the heart is sweet and simple and then there's a Thumbelina charm (from my love of fairy tales) and a starfish one for another ocean nod. Looking at it just makes me happy.
I could go on (there are a lot of sentimental pieces sitting on my dresser), but really, almost everything I wear, from the least expensive to the most has a story behind it and a person it connects me to (even if it's just who was out with me when I bought it!).
I just don't have the same with my shoes (except for an ankle scar I could point out from ones that wrapped) and so for me, the answer is easy.
