South of the Border Shopping

girl about t.o. canada (Apr.14.10)

Halifax has some great shopping (really), but growing up I admit to wanting more. Then I moved to Montreal and Toronto where there are a lot of options and while I love buying close to home, there's always been something about the States and the excitement of something different.

Here are five of the shops I couldn't wait to hit, even if just for some great window shopping, on a recent trip to California (earthquake and all).

Target
A first on many people's border-crossing lists for sweet steals (love the Mossimo sports bras) and designer collaborations like Jean Paul Gaultier or Liberty of London's famous florals. North of the 49th, let's hope the rumours are true that it's on the way.
  J. Crew
The purveyors of prep, this one's another shop I like to see in person and mix in classics like gingham, clam diggers and cardigans with my regular wardrobe (without going full on Cape Cod). This time I was particularly smitten with this skirt. Apparently J. Crew is also looking at a Canadian expansion.
  Brooks Brothers
I thought I was being so clever taking advantage of our almost par dollar and US pricing of a non-iron slim fit shirt for a gift (rather than the recently opened Toronto store). But they beat me to it and just announced new lower prices here ($89.50 vs. $108), plus 15% further while the dollar stays strong.
  Intermix
I love the mix of lines (including Canada's own long-loved Smythe) and available offerings at this almost mini department store. These heels from Gianvito Rossi (son of Sergio) immediately caught my eye, even if they would have put me over my duty-free allowance alone (and certainly look like the Forever 21 pair Mia found).
  Department Stores
Don't get be wrong, I love Holts, The Bay (and Mills out east) but I can't resist stopping into Saks, Bloomingdale's and Barneys Co-Op for the sheer size of browsing (like shopping on steroids).

Anthropologie was always another-must stop but is actually now closer to our office than it was in California.

What about you - what stores are on your vacation shopping list?
