Being sweet includes giving back. See Sweetspotters in action as they share (and hopefully inspire) charities close to their hearts in a series of special guest posts.
left to right: apple cinnamon oatmeal, latte and maple bacon
Why I got involved: I first heard about this last year, the Toronto event's inaugural year. My best friend (my cupcake comrade) was away at the time, so we vowed that we would participate the next year. We both love baking and the fact that proceeds were going to charity was the icing on the cupcake.
What was the biggest challenge: Getting up at 6am to bake our three varieties of cupcakes fresh! Also, because there were so many entries this year, thinking of a way to stand out during our presentation. We themed our cupcakes around breakfast: latte, apple cinnamon oatmeal, and maple bacon. Because, everyone likes bacon.
What was the most rewarding: Even though this was a very fun afternoon, we knew that money was going to a great cause. A stomach full of cupcakes didn’t hurt either. At the end of the day, Cupcake Camp raised $1,700 through registrations, tickets, and donations, as well as full grocery cart of non-perishable foods.
How can others help: Currently, cupcake camps exist in a few Canadian cities including Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver. Also, you make donations to the Daily Bread Food Bank through the Daily Bread website. You can also offer your services as a personal cupcake taster to encourage more entries from bakers - amateur to professional.
