Best Drugstore Beauty Buys

girl about t.o.: easy and accessible beauty finds canada (Jul.29.11)

When I was growing up, sometimes my mom and I would duck out to a drugstore for no reason other than we wanted to explore the aisles.

We might come back with a magazine, or a new shower gel, or sometimes nothing at all — it was just fun to explore. My friends and I would sometimes buy 99 cent face masks for a sleepover (and we've already talked about our obsession with lip smackers), or even just some candy. But it was universal that we all liked stopping into Shoppers or Lawtons (an east coast company).

These days, I still like drugstore discoveries as much as I ever did. And while my makeup bag, counter top and vanity are full of a variety of products, here are five of my current favourites that can be picked up almost anywhere.

John Frieda Volume Refresher Dry Shampoo ($10.50)
Frizz-Ease was one of the first hair treatments I tried (and still love), but this more recent release is my must-have right now. A few quick sprays to your roots absorbs excess grease and really lets you get away with another day of not shampooing. Plus, it blends into even the darkest hair and since it's not a powder, doesn't end up everywhere.

Live Clean Exotic Nectar - Argan Oil Restorative Shampoo and Conditioner ($7 each)
I love the smell of these hair products (also now available in a body wash and hand soap) and how my hair feels after I've used them (and it sure doesn't hurt that the company is committed to using renewable and sustainable resources).

Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara ($9.99)
This $10 find holds up against any mascara I've tried. Admittedly I'm not really looking for lash growth over time, so long as the time I apply it, the mascara goes on smooth, stretches the look of my lashes and keeps things separated, all of which this delivers.

CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast ($9.99)
I'm all about making make-up easy. (Don't get me wrong, I love the stuff, but most days I just want something I can swipe on quickly and feel a little more put together.) This dual-ended stick is perfect for smudging on some colour and adding some complementary depth without any real added effort.
Clean & Clear Oil-Absorbing Sheets ($8)
I have rather dry skin, and generally don't really like how pressed or loose powder looks on me (or have any on me later in the day). But, my dry skin can still get shiny sometimes (fun, really), and these are the perfect way to put an end to that, without smudging what is already on.
