5 Book to Movie Adaptations I'm Curious to Check Out

girl about t.o.: novels to films canada (Aug.15.11)

The other day in the office, someone mentioned seeing the cover of The Help (Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel set in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi) a lot lately on the subway.

The movie version just came out this week (that's Emma Stone and Viola Davis above in a still) so one could assume several of those commuters wanted to read the book before seeing the film in theatres. I get that.

I always like to read a book before seeing the movie version (and to be honest, prefer reading it before I even know who the actors are or if there's going to be a movie, as it's kind of fun seeing if your imagined version of the character matches up with what's eventually on screen).

I get to do that with this one, and definitely want to watch how the story I read and pictured plays out on the big screen. Here are four more books-to-movies on my to-watch list:

Harrry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two. Yes, it's been out for awhile and I conceivably could have seen it multiple times by now (my nephew is up to three). But, my Dad and I have a tradition and I'm a stickler for tradition: We've waited to be in the same city to watch every single Harry Potter movie released (he was the one to first send me the books as a magical distraction) and so I've got to hold out for another week until I head out east. So far, I've loved seeing the J.K. Rowling series come to life.

One Day. Emma and Dexter connect on July 15, 1988 and for the next two decades, the David Nicholls book drops in on July 15 to tell where they are at that point in time. Someone recommended this book awhile back and I forgot about it until seeing some press for the movie coming out August 19. So while I already know Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess are taking on the leads, I'm reading the book now to see how it unfolds first. And the plot device is definitely keeping me hooked to see where things are the next year.

Something Borrowed
. This one's out on DVD Tuesday and tells the story Emily Giffin originally wrote of two best friends, one guy they both love and all of the complications in between. I remember the book being a fun diversion (which after all, is sometimes exactly what you're looking for) and missed the movie when it first came out. Did they stick to the original story? Catch the nuances you pick up when you read? If I've read it, I'm always curious to see it and find out.

The Hunger Games. I think this might be the first book/series I've read after seeing so much talk about it on twitter (and yes, another one originally aimed at young adults — that I couldn't put down). I knew the movie was on the horizon but hadn't read much of the casting (and photo stills hadn't yet been released) as I devoured the dystopian story. So now I join the legion of fans waiting to see how it's translated.

But for now, Bridget Jones's Diary is airing on TV again.
