Fashion Week Fixes

girl about t.o. Toronto (Mar.19.09)

We're into the homestretch of Fashion Week.

And while it's definitely a fun gig to get to head down to the tents each day and cover all of the happenings for Sweetspot @ LG Fashion Week, it's also long hours logged on our feet and in front of our computers and a total break from any sense of our regular routines.

So with that, I thought I would use today to share some of the things that are making repeat appearances in helping me through the week. And if a disclaimer is needed, this is all just stuff actually around my house and desk*.

1. Some kind of snack.
The tents are crowded and the chip trucks can't (well, shouldn't) sustain someone for an entire week. I used to think only my mother carried food with her but now I know why.

2. Online and faking flawless.
Technically one could easily get by without a net-enabled phone but this year, I'm addicted to reading what people are twittering about before (sometimes during) and after the shows. The makeup doesn't come with me but a quick touch-up before heading out helps. I really do love my Joe Fresh peach lip stain, Cargo tobago gloss and Kiehl's tinted moisturizer.

3. Water is what I should be drinking; Diet Coke always finds its way in...
Hydration is tricky when it comes to fashion week - the only washrooms are the three stalls outside of the tents at Nathan Phillips Square (which get both crowded and gross pretty darn quick).
4. OK, another kind of snack.
Just in case #1 looked a little too virtuous; I already had some timbits today.

5. Seeing is good.
A fashion show just wouldn't be fun if I didn't break out the corrective eyewear options.

6. So is being able to walk.
I love heels but if I'm only dressing up for later in the day, I've been taking advantage of our recent sunny weather and walking to work in my admittedly well-worn bensimon sneakers.
7. Snacking seems to come up a lot.
When you're home after the final show and getting online to upload your share of the morning's posts things like a chocolate bar found in one of the giveaway bags are too good to always pass up.

8. What, and miss Project Runway Canada?
On Tuesday night I wasn't going to miss the Heart Truth show (and knew I wouldn't make it home by 10), but I also needed to know which designer went next. Like Steph, I heart TiVo.

9. When your curtains are sheer...

I used to think sleep masks were relegated to soap opera characters in the 80s. Then I moved into a place with a great big bedroom window and sunny beige curtains. My room is bright as soon as the day is so when I mentioned on a trip with my folks how easy it was to sleep in my dark hotel room, my dad picked this up for me. Much easier than me changing those curtains.

Of course, there are more (late night sushi spots, the ENTIRE editorial team and the oil of oregano I'm convinced is keeping my cold at bay - even if it's just the placebo effect) but it's almost time to get back to the tents.

*But if Diet Coke ever offered to sponsor my life (not work - editorial's always impartial), I can't say I'd say no...
