Robe if You Want To
girl about t.o. Toronto
(May.21.09)
The jury may still be out on nature vs. nurture but when it comes to wearing a bathrobe, I think it’s all about how you’ve been raised.
In fact, robes were so commonplace in my household, that it was only recently I realized some people aren't so fond (or even see the point) of them when a friend questioned the three I have hanging by my shower.
(Though this friend had also been told a terry robe was an after-shower towel alternative and really, who wants to sit around in a damp housecoat?)
My parents are such fans that if you were to visit (as I did over Victoria Day weekend), you would find a set of robes, from waffle to spa, hanging in the guest rooms. I even found this old photo on that trip that shows how deep our robe roots run (in all my side ponytail glory).
As for my collection: Why three? (OK, four if you count the one under my desk waiting to go home.)
I think they each serve a unique purpose. I have the traditional cozy terrycloth, a lightweight cotton version plus a thin silk one my sister-in-law gave me – and I find myself using them all (the short jersey version at the office will be perfect for the hot summer season).
But all this thinking about housecoats has left me looking at mine a little closer. The terry’s a bit tattered, the belt of my cotton one is long gone and maybe it’s time for something new.
That's just my nature.
