My sister is a runner. She runs half marathons, full marathons, triathlons...she even runs to the gym before working out. And her body shows it. Sadly, I don't do any of these things. It's not that I don't enjoy the feeling of being fit, it's just that I get bored so easily. Five minutes of running feels like an hour, and I'm ready to head home and enjoy a glass of wine.
At the gym, I force myself to do classes. It's the only way I can work out for long enough to actually make a difference. Still, I know how good running is for the heart, so when I received an invite for the Nike Run Club night at the new Nike Runner's Lounge (relocated from Yonge & Summerhill to inside the Nike store at 110 Bloor St. W.), I said yes (then swore to myself I wouldn't back out. No matter what.)
The Nike Runner's Lounge offers various programs five days a week--from Learn to Run (for beginners) to Built to Run (a bootcamp-style run) to Stretch to Run (a 2k run followed by a half-hour of yoga-style stretching).
Thursdays are Nike Run Club nights, and I had the option of a 3k, 5k or 7k run. Surprise, surprise, I chose 3k. Luckily, Ashleigh not only agreed to do the run too (she actually does them regularly) but she also agreed to do 3k with me.
The hardest part of the run was that only five minutes into it, we practically ran right past my condo. If I were alone, I may have just made a quick left.
But I didn't.
I kept running. And then I realized why. I was trying out the new Nike LunarGlide+. Usually I choose my running shoes by colour alone; the prettier the better, so the orange sneaks (above) wouldn't have been on my radar. But when I tried them on, I couldn't believe how light they were. It felt like I'd gone on a magic diet during my sleep and awoken 10 pounds lighter. Not only that, but the shoes have a special foam core that molds to your feet and helps correct over-pronation while you run. That, combined with the girl talk during the run made me realize I have finally found a new love for running.
I've even gone for three more runs since. Next up? I'm going to read Fitness Expert Larry Track's response to our reader question: How Can I Tell if I'm Overtraining? Don't laugh. You never know...
Thought that was sweet? You'll enjoy:
