How Do You Like Them Apples

Montreal (Aug.14.07)

We don’t need to be told that fashion is high art, but it sure is nice to come across a store that properly celebrates the sculptural magic of clothes.
Atelier Wooden ApplesAtelier Wooden Apples, a new boutique/gallery/workshop in Mile End, has found a refreshing way to honour the art of sartorial style. Their beautiful collection of clothing, jewellery and home accessories by a rotating cast of independent designers from Montreal and abroad is as stunning as the monthly exhibits of textile-media art on their gallery wall. (Read: monthly vernissages with cupcakes and beer, so check regularly!).

Everything in the store is practical and fun; the kind of unique, personal pieces you plot for months to steal from your best friend’s room. Handmade dresses ($30-$100) and underwear ($12) feature cute embroidered designs, and the gold bird pendants by little blue sparrow ($30) are impossible to resist.

The hand-dyed spools of wool, carved wooden knitting needles and upcoming seminars on sewing and embroidery for beginners are even inspiring us to create some wearable art for ourselves. (If we discover our talents end at tea cozies, we’ll at least know where to effortlessly acquire some crafty fashion.)
