Rhett Butler didn’t give a damn. Marie Antoinette didn’t bother beyond cake. But we bet they’d give a shirt.
Specifically Give a Shi®t, a line of T-shirts and humanitarian project from Vancouver designer Melissa Blyth (she’s behind one of Oprah’s favourite eco-bags) that is now available for purchase online.
Collaborating with graphic artist Kate McNair, the designs of the sustainable tees ($34.99) were pulled from both local graffiti and interviews the duo held. Plus two per cent of the profits go to the Downtown Eastside Transformational Fund Melissa Blyth co-created to help impoverished residents into employment.
Our own attitudes soared when we discovered Believe and Receive, a classic dark crewneck (in oh-so smooth organic cotton), printed with an inspiring message found on a Downtown Eastside landmark. The next design making our list? Love Your Ghetto, screened with the silhouette of a brick wall in the background. Last but not least is Heron, a striking red design sketched by aboriginal artist Garnet Tobacco. We even added the gold silk charmeuse and organic hemp Soho Bag ($66) to our purchase to replace a few plastic bags while we were at it.
Giving back to this cause is fashion that’s easy to care about.
