Since we’re still deep in the throes of winter, the Fall/Winter 2009-2010 presentation at Montreal Fashion Week felt entirely appropriate. (Alas, we still have to wait to wear these sweet designs.) Here’s what you can look forward to:
The big trend: There wasn’t one, unless you count black (and we don’t). The good news: Most of what we’re wearing now is still relevant, so we can easily (and economically) update for next season. Lots of tweed, plaid and silk.
The head-turners: For the wow factor, we turn to Denis Gagnon. His collection, replete with rich fabrics, neo-draping and asymmetrical details, captured our imagination. Dinh Bá presented glitzy ready-to-wear designs, while Helmer and Yves Jean Lacasse of Envers took it to the next level with couture dresses in lush fabrics.
The Next Generation: Télio’s 2009 competition for design students. This year’s nature theme inspired stunning creations based on earth, air, fire and water.
The highlights: Judith Dejardins’ (Bodybag by Jude/J.U.D.E) show, complete with guards from La Citadelle dressed in full regalia. (And Mayor Gérald Tremblay announcing that $2.4 million will be infused into the Montreal fashion industry over the next three years.)
The finishing touches: Platforms and Mary Janes marked up the runway, while embellished boots by Industry discovered in the showroom were funky and fabulous. Jewellery ran the gamut from delicate to bold, with beautiful avant-garde pieces from gender-neutral designer Harikiri.
