Fine China

China’s largest metropolis is a unique mix of the colonial past and technological future. From the 19th century European influence to the modern skyscrapers being built every day, Shanghai is a fast-paced and vibrant city.

Where to stay: The city is divided by the Huangpu River – the Puxi (west bank) and the Pudong (east bank). Many of the newest hotels are in the Pudong section and one of the first was Pudong Shangri-La, located right on the river. Unique with its feminine Grand Tower suites and masculine River Wing suites based on the style of a railroad apartment, Pudong Shangri-La boasts unbeatable views of The Bund district. The St. Regis Shanghai, recently voted one of the 100 best hotels in the world by Travel & Leisure, offers modern guest suites and a butler who will take care of any requests from unpacking to booking excursions. It’s located in the heart of the Pudong, and offers a spa that’s sure to solve any lasting effects of jet lag.

What to do: Head over to the Puxi side and experience the city’s past along the tree-lined streets of the French Concession, with its myriad of local boutiques, such as Madame Mao’s Dowry. Wander around the Xin Tian Di area, with its Shikumen architecture reinvented into a sleek modern area for shopping and dining. Check out Shanghai Tang, with its range of Asian-influenced clothing and homewares, Zen Homestore with its unique gifts and objects for home and Twin Angel for fabulous vintage label fashions. Take a taxi to the South Bund Soft Spinning Fabric Market, locally known as the Fabric Market. Wander the stalls, pick out favourite styles or fabrics and treat yourself to very affordable custom-made clothing.

Where to eat: Check out The Bund area – such as M on the Bund with its unique mix of Asian and Euro cuisine, Glamour Bar for pre- or post-dinner cocktails and Number Five for fusion cuisine and drinks. Xin Tian Di’s Din Tai Fung is the spot for local obsession Shanghai dumplings and for jazz lovers, head to Brown Sugar to kick back with a mix of locals and ex-pats.
