From the Liberty Bell to Independence Hall, Philadelphia’s well-preserved past is always present. But a stroll through Philly’s streets reveals a city that’s as hip as it is historic.
Where to Sleep
The Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing (from about US $120 per night) is the city’s only waterfront hotel. Conveniently located in the historic district, amazing attractions are mere steps away. But the sights are just as sweet from the suites – each room features unrivalled skyline or river views.
Where to Eat
Philly is fast becoming a culinary capital. Tempt your taste buds at the must-see markets (Reading Terminal Market and the Italian Market) before trying other local favourites like Continental, a popular Old City diner. Brunch features a selection of cool yet quirky cocktails, including a bacon-infused Bloody Mary (US $10).
Craving quintessential Philly cuisine? Follow the hungry hordes to Pat’s for a traditional cheesesteak. We indulged in the “Whiz wit” – a sizzling steak sandwich smothered in Cheese Whiz and fried onions (US $9).
For a fine dining affair, score a seat at Devon Seafood Grill on swanky Rittenhouse Square. The daily fresh fish selection (US $20-30) is sweetened on Sundays by half-priced bottles of wine.
What to Do
Philly hearts art. The City of Brotherly Love boasts an extraordinary collection of public art, including the world’s largest outdoor mural project (over 2800 works and counting). We took a tour around town – a veritable open-air museum – to admire installations like the iconic LOVE sculpture in JFK Plaza. For a more traditional art outing, run the steps (Rocky style) to the world-renowned Philadelphia Museum of Art (US $16 for general admission).
