Summer In The City

canada (Jul.26.08)

Ashleigh Dempster & Amanda Blakely, Co-Founders of The Society, recently exported their Toronto-based culture club to NYC. We asked them their top picks for the best of The Big Apple in the summertime:

Empire Hotel Where to Sleep:
The Empire Hotel recently reopened after an elegant, multi-million dollar redesign. The piece de resistance: a bi-level deck featuring a plunge pool and private cabanas (equipped with ceiling fans, flat screens, iPod docks, phones and mini bars). Reservations are a must at this centrally located gem (rates start at $240).

If you’re flying in for a quick NYC fix and don’t want to break the bank, book an apartment at the Minetta Suites in the West Village. They’re clean, fairly modern and run from a reasonable $175 a night.

Where to Eat:
Bobo Tucked away in a non-descript brownstone, Bobo (abbreviation for “bourgeois bohemian”) boasts a pan-European menu and a garden that’s NYC’s best-kept secret (Appetizers $13-18, mains $22-34).

For the best scrambled eggs ($14) and cappuccino ($5) in the city, head to Sant Ambroeus. Immensely popular for brunch and lunch, we also love indulging in the signature desserts ($9). Best bet: opt for a table on the patio.

Bar Martignetti is more low-key beachside hangout than Soho hotspot. Brother’s Tom & Anthony Martignetti created a casual space for their A-list clientele. Featuring delectable favorites like The Best Mac ‘n Cheese Ever ($10), you’ll feel right at home here.

Rusty Knot The Rusty Knot (425 West St., near 11th St.), from the owners of the hugely popular Spotted Pig, looks more like a small town dive than a hip neighborhood joint, and it has the prices to match – we still can’t believe we found 99-cent beer and $3 cans in NYC.
