We’ve always been fans of nature, but not always of the sore backs, bug bites and dirt that accompanies the “roughing it in the woods” experience.
But now that the JW Marriott Rosseau Resort & Spa (from $199 a night) has opened in Muskoka, we can satisfy our adventurous side without sacrificing our need to be pampered.
Overlooking the rugged shores of Lake Rosseau, this brand new chateau had us at hello. From the rustic-cum-refined Canadiana décor to the gorgeous individual suites (each outfitted with it’s own kitchenette and fireplace) we felt both spoiled and right at home.
But while the indoors are almost as great as the outdoors, we couldn’t wait to get outside. Built as part of Red Leaves Muskoka, the hotel is nestled beside a 700 acre nature reserve just begging to be explored— whether by bike, foot or, in the winter, snowmobile, snowshoe or cross-country ski (check www.redleaves.com for rental rates). No matter what the season, there’s always plenty of activities – from ice fishing to golf to art lessons—to pique our curiosity.
But we have to admit that getting back to nature is easier knowing we’ll quickly be returning to the lap of luxury. What better to complement a long hike than a Muskoka Sugar Body Polish ($120)? The Spa also features a swim-through indoor/outdoor pool and hot tub that are open year round (and best enjoyed when flanked by drifts of snow).
To top it all off, the two delicious restaurants Teca and Cottages feature meals sourced by local suppliers and farm to fork cuisine in mind (both from about $35 per person). In the mood for a quick snack? Try Lakes for a tasty bite (like the Lobster Pogo Stick- $8) or Canuck-inspired cocktail (we loved the Sam Roberts- $12) that’ll have you coming back for more.
After our stay, we were relaxed, refreshed and definitely happy campers – no roughing it required.
