Divided over two continents (Europe and Asia), Istanbul also has a dual personality, split between the Old World (think famous sites like Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque) and a nouveau cosmopolitan vibe. It’s also Europe without the Euro (and really, what’s better than that?).
Where to Sleep:
Splurge for a stay at the Çiragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul (rooms starting at 273€) for a sleep in the lap of luxury in a real Ottoman Palace. Besides the spectacular views of the Bosphorus, we’re loving the small details like light controls on the touch-screen phone. For a hipper vibe, the Witt Istanbul Suites (rooms starting at 149€) offers a modern-contemporary boutique hotel setting in the heart of Istanbul’s nightlife.
Where to Eat:
Traditional Turkish fare takes centre stage at Borsa Restaurant near Taksim where we savoured dishes like shepherd’s salad and köfte or meatballs (dinner for two about $90). For a taste of Turkey with a magical Asian twist, make a beeline for newly opened Abracadabra located in the waterfront area of Arnavutköy. Spellbinding dishes are served up on one of the resto's four cozy floors and include traditional borek pastry stuffed with smoked meat, served in a shot glass of pomegranate dipping sauce (dinner for two about $70).
What to Do:
Treat yourself like a Sultan at the Cağaloğlu Hamami (about 40€/person), an over 250-year-old traditional Turkish bath. While searching for authentic kilims in the Grand Bazaar sit and enjoy the shopkeepers’ Turkish hospitality with a glass of delicious apple tea.
