With all the great French restaurants Montreal has to offer, we’re on the lookout for one that has some sort of hook…so when we heard that the chef from the now defunct Brunoise opened his own bistro, we couldn’t get there fast enough.
The lure behind owner and chef Michel Ross’s Mas Cuisine isn’t just its modest 28-seat capacity, nor is it the nouveau-cool Wellington Street location in Verdun, but rather its clever (and affordable) pricing, where the price of the main dish includes one entrée and one dessert.
Initially tempted by the Scallops with Courgettes and Tomatoes in a Vanilla-Based Froth ($34), we decided on the lightly spiced Beets with Goat’s Cheese and Pistachios as a starter for the impeccably prepared Beef Bourguignon due Mas ($29), which was laden with roasted baby onions and sautéed mushrooms. The perfect top-off to the meal came in the form of the tangy Citrus Assortment with Tea and Almonds, topped with sugared grapefruit and mandarin slices and a pear sorbet with almond slivers.
Mas Cuisine’s hip location, standout service and culinary excellence keep it a notch above the usual bistro fare.
Hats off to the chef.
