Though we’re sad that our bikinis will soon be stored in the back corner of the dresser drawer, our happiness meter is stealthily rising, knowing that we can trade the past few months of strict salad-eating for a bite of a much-missed cupcake or two.
Big City Cupcakes -- originally started in the Okanagan -- already has fans swarming its downtown location, which just recently opened to the Kitsilano crowd. You’ll never find a day-old treat at these sleek shops, where 50-year-old family recipes help make up the sweet list of 27 cupcake flavours.
We were like kids in a candy store, quickly choosing a summery Flavour of the Month called Saskatoon Berry ($3.95 per filled cupcake), a vanilla number with cream cheese frosting, fresh berries and cheesecake centre. The Chocolate Mounds tastes just like the famed coconut-and-chocolate candy bar, and the Lemon Drop delights with its not-too-sweet lemon curd filling.
Those with dietary restrictions can indulge in egg- and dairy-free cupcakes ($4.95) with soy-based frosting as well as gluten-free cupcakes ($4.95) made of almond flour.
With options like these, we can have a cupcake before bikini season is out, after all.
