The 5 SpicesToronto (Feb.02.10)

“I feel like Chinese.”
“Well, I feel like Indian!”

Our spat was cut short thanks to a fiery, new lunch spot. The 5 Spices serves up Hakka cuisine, a style that brings Asian spices and cooking techniques to Indian tastes.

Paneer Poppers ($4 for four) combined chilli and Indian cheese in a delicious croquette form. Green chilli- and cilantro-laden 5 Spices Chicken ($10, served with rice) and the significantly milder Fried Noodles with Vegetables ($8) were ideal for sharing. A soothing Mango Lassi ($3) helped quell the fire.

But we were most relieved to learn that Fried Leeches with Vanilla Ice Cream was a typo. (We wouldn’t last a day on Survivor.) The Fried Lychees ($4) were just the thing to end our meal (and our debate).
