We love all the packed, practically-nightclub-like izakayas that have sprouted as of late, but sometimes it’s nice to enjoy a meal in a place where we can actually hear our date.
Good thing we came across Kakurenbou downtown, just off the beaten Robson Street track.
A deceptively small entrance leads way to two great doors, opening into an impressive space that feels like a sacred Japanese temple. We worked on a flask of hot sake ($8) while admiring the eccentricities (look for references to the “Most Recommended Man”, an affiliate of Suntory Whisky!).
Snacking highlights include the juicy Kurobuta sausages ($7), soramame (fried fava beans; $6) and Tebasaki by Nagoya chicken wings ($5).
And best of all? No Advil was needed upon departure.
