The Wa To Go

sushiCalgary (May.22.07)

Us: “Let’s go for sushi.”

Us: “Yum. Where?”

Wa Sushi A wise (and eavesdropping) stranger: “Go to Wa’s.”

Dear stranger, whoever you are, thank you.

Sitting in the newly-renovated hidden-gem of a restaurant, we could tell we were surrounded by satisfied people who know their sushi (it’s always a good sign to see expert chopstickers at the tables next to you).

On the menu: innovative rolls so big that they aren’t really rolls at all. Like the Unagi Sagata Maku ($20), a 10-piece masterpiece of barbequed eel and avocado that chef/owner Takeshi Nishida skillfully molds into the shape of an eel. Or the Sunrise Maku ($18): six heaping blocks of rice, smoked salmon and cream cheese, topped with wedges of lemon and spread into the shape of a sun.

And we couldn’t resist the sushi/sashimi special of the day, a jumbo prawn dunked in spicy sauce and wrapped in nori ($3).

And our mother said never talk to strangers…
