Famous Grains

(May.31.07)
Alberta might be famous for its wheat, but personally, we like the golden grain much better after it has been made into bread.
Now we can devour world-renown fresh-baked loaves made right here in Calgary. COBS, a hugely popular Australian bakery chain, just opened its first location in Cowtown.
Making everything from scratch daily and using local ingredients whenever possible, the prices range from $.30 for a bun to $5.00 for a large specialty loaf. Best known for their healthy gourmet breads, COBS could turn any carb-foe into a sandwich fiend. The crunchy Cape Seed Loaf – packed with grains, seeds, sunflower and flax – will be perfect for our BLT. We’ll be turning to Apricot Loaf (made without added sugar or oil) for PB and jam.
And since we’ve never left a bakery without something sweet, we had to decide on something from the rows of fruity twists and flavourful scones. Our friendly neighbourhood baker made a suggestion: The double chocolate-chip scone, warmed up and topped with ice cream. The trick is getting home without eating the scone.
We placed an order for a baker’s dozen.
