Eat your Peas

restaurantMontreal (Jan.15.08)

We are among the few, the lucky, the proud, with access to daily indulgences of crispy baguettes, creamy cappuccinos and sumptuous cheeses. Maybe our city isn't broken down into arrondissements, but we still feel a little part Paris.

A weekend jet-set over the pond may not be in our near future, but the next best thing is nearby. Through the French doors of restaurant mogul Peter Morentzo's Le Pois Penché, we were transported into an authentic bistro complete with a raw bar, brasserie décor and perfectly polished waiters (could this be amour?).

Our crisp white linens were soon laden with a brunch as inspiring as an Eiffel tower view. From the baked omelette with Gruyere, herbs and a touch of Fleur de Sel ($18) to the macaroni au gratin ($15) with truffle oil, every plate is garnished with a signature leaning pea. And though we were tempted to squeeze in the brioche French toast with Grand Marnier and berries ($18), we decided instead to indulge in the sommelier's tasting sampler (3x65ml glasses, $12) to start the weekend off right.

Add in French music and a perfect people-watching view, and all we were missing was the beret.
