Apparently things are supposed to be more satisfying and complete when they come in threes. Think: the three musketeers, three scoops in a sundae, three courses to a meal, the three little pigs and now three very successful restauranteurs.
The folks from Joe Beef and Liverpool House have most certainly done it again with their third resto, aptly named McKiernan (Joe Beef was the nickname given to famed Montreal tavern owner Charles McKiernan). This time they’ve managed to gobble up yet another prime spot on that familiar foodie stretch of Notre Dame St. W, next to their other acclaimed establishments. A lunch counter by day and wine bar by night, McKiernan’s kitschy and unfussy Kennebunkport-esque décor has the same laid-back vibe as its predecessors, and, more importantly, the food is equally delish.
The eclectic menu boasts items like the house-named McKiernan salad ($9) filled with summery goodies (arugula, beets, grapes, pine nuts, green beans, tomatoes and cheese, to be exact) and 12 oysters and toast ($12). A definite must-have on our lunch list is the chicken Tikka sandwich ($10) with its sweet pineapple and chutney filling.
For the grand finale devour the ooey gooey Browne Maltezer ($5), served warm and covered with strawberries. Now according to the Rule of Three, we should probably order two more, right?
