On a recent health crusade we overhauled our office snack drawer with a stock of no-sugar candy bars and carob chip cookies. We felt great at the checkout counter.
Come snack time, however, things turned ugly. Our noble treats tasted like cardboard dipped in honey. That’s when we went straight to Les Chocolats de Chloé to try a decadent new flavour – the edgy, palette-awakening fig and balsamic bonbon. Equally gratifying (and unusual) were the fleur de sel, the passion fruit and the basil chocolates (6 for $11). And how could we resist a can of vanilla sugar ($7) for our afternoon coffee, a homemade brownie ($4) and hilarious chocolates shaped like sardines (2 for $2.50)?
Riding our sugar buzz, we chatted with Chloé, the owner-chocolatier in this cozy Parisian-style boutique. She makes her bonbons at the back of the shop, using the highest quality Valrhona chocolate beans. Heading back to work, we began to wonder if anyone would believe that fig and balsamic chocolate could be part of the healthy Mediterranean diet…
