The greatest thing since…

Toronto (Nov.04.05)

Go ahead say it! We know it’s cliché but we do love our bread. In fact, despite a deluge of anti-bread fad diets, our whole culture pretty much revolves around the stuff (imagine peanut butter and jam without the bread, lox and cream cheese without the bagel, a foot-long sub without the bun, a grilled veggie panini without…). Only a little over a month old and already we can’t imagine life without Epi Breads (watch your back Ace Bakeries).

This newest player on the artisan bread scene (and yet another mouth-watering bakery to hit the Bayview strip) makes breads the rustic way, with no added shortening, sugars, eggs, or dairy products, except those that occur naturally in olive oil, cheese and nuts. Almost all the loaves are made with sourdough (except the French one).

You’ll eventually have to try a loaf of everything, but our favourites include Pumpkinseed, Black olive, Italian cheese and Rosemary & Olive oil. Our sweet tooth is also appeased with Fig and Anise and the Pecan Fruit. Even our gluten-intolerant friends have an option with the organic spelt bread.

Also check out the store’s naturally made soups, salads, vinaigrettes, dips, pestos and prepared entrees (delicious and nutritious!).

Tip: Get there early (it opens at 7 am) and buy your bread the old fashion way – hot, fresh and from the greatest selection available.
