We’re self-proclaimed Butter Tart Experts. Unfortunately, our recent samplings have left us wondering if there are any Expert Butter Tart Bakers in the city.
So when we strolled into the The Flaky Tart, a recently transplanted-from-Woodbridge-to-Mt. Pleasant bakery, we couldn’t help but mumble while staring at the display:
Nobody makes a good butter tart anymore
Baker (and owner)Madelaine Sperry, arranging a nearby tray of Cin-Cin Buns ($2.25) topped with caramel goop thick enough to remove leg hair, overheard our snarky remark (did we mention we hadn’t had our coffee yet?). Moments later - after some friendly encouragement - we gave one of her tarts ($2) a chance.
We were too busy chewing to tell her it was magically delicious. Or how it had the perfect butter-to-sugar ratio. Or how it was most certainly baked by an expert. When we finally swallowed the last bite, there was only one thing we could say:
I’ll take a few of those to go, please.
