Sniff Test

Toronto (Jan.16.07)

We have a knack for sniffing things out, whether it's the good (gourmet cake), the bad (did something perishable fall under the fridge?) or the juicy (nosey is just layman's for efficient gossiper).

We're driven by our olfactory senses and always follow our (figurative) Jennifer-Grey-pre-operation nose for the best results. So when we discovered the newly opened Tea Market, we dove snozz-first into the 65-plus selections of tea (with more on the way). Offering an interactive environment (owner Peter Hurtado wasn't satisfied with behind-the-counter tea stores) curious consumers can pick their brew based on scent by sniffing every brand of tea with a sniffer: A lidded jar that is to tea what testers are to perfume.

Sold in 50g ($4-5) and 100g ($8-10) bags, finding your preferred blend is an irresistible activity. Our favourites include the deliciously fruity Bora Bora Mango Rooibos from South Africa, the smooth Vanilla Cream from Sri Lanka and an organic peppermint tea from the US. For extra-fancy cup and saucer parties, we suggest the clean apple taste with the Tea Market's priciest choice, Peony White Needle Tea (around $50 for 50g) .

We were so excited about investigating Tea Market's smells, we almost forgot about the next, even better step: The taste test.
