Waking up with a stuffed nose, we searched our internal encyclopedia of home remedies for a cure. Unfortunately, between “anxiety” (cure: junk food) and “hangover” (cure: junk food), there was no listing for “common cold.”
Instead of reaching for Cheetos (we doubt Chester the Cheetah could soothe our sore throat), we borrowed a tradition from Ontario-bred, Greek brothers George and Andrew Matheou and brewed teas by voudou (about $8.50 per bag, brews about 21 cups).
Their two tea blends are made from the siderites flower, grown wildly at the base of Mount Olympus and believed to have healing properties (anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and containing the increasingly popular anti-oxidants).
We grabbed a spoonful of medicine, digging into the Olympus blend. With large chunks of cinnamon, anise and cloves, it’s a spicier version of the pure siderites Purus blend. After steeping the hand-picked buds, we inhaled a steamy cup and felt our sinuses clearing.
Regardless of whether our instant relief was from the generations-old recipe or our deep-fried lunch, we’ll be turning to this Greek cure-all come our next comfort-drink craving.
