Orient Express

Vancouver (Aug.10.06)

So the other night we were curled up on the couch watching the Food Network (hey, even we have to take a night off occasionally) and found ourselves falling in love with Kylie Kwong's adorable Australian accent, and our mouths watering at her simple, yet elegant, recipes. But then we started reading the ingredient list: Hokkien noodles? Shaoxing Cooking Wine? Would our dreams of culinary triumph be shattered faster than we could say, "pass the chopsticks?"

Not after a visit to Sambal & Ginger, a gem of a haunt paying tribute to Asian cuisine by stocking an astonishing range of specialty ingredients, utensils and housewares - all at bargain basement prices. We found everything we needed to put on a Chinese banquet. Not to mention Thai, Indonesian, Philippine, Japanese and Indian banquets as well. Owner (and professional chef) Lynn Santiago was also on hand to answer questions, inspiring us to venture further with our culinary exploration.

So we snapped up our noodles, cooking wine and a tub of (melt-in-your-mouth addictive) pork floss - all for less than $8. Next week we're going back for the Zen-inspired dishware.

Maybe it's time to throw out our take-out menus...
