It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Gastown lunch spot Brioche. But its mile-long lineups? Well, ever since we discovered The Greedy Pig half a block east, we’ve finally been able to keep our lunch hours to, well, an hour.
Owners Cameron and Allison McKinnon, formerly at Il Giardino and Brix, respectively, have made their new restaurant an homage to their home province, Saskatchewan. We slid into a tall booth opposite the chic bar (made comfortable and un-pretentious with a flat-screen TV—on silent, of course), then tossed back the tasty Roughrider cocktail ($8), developed by The Cascade’s Nick Devine and featuring pureed raspberries, black raspberry liqueur, lime and ginger beer.
But since a liquid lunch (sometimes) doesn’t suffice, we also ordered the Oyama roast beef sandwich ($11) and couscous and Mediterranean vegetable salad ($3). Chef Sean Sylvester’s version of Beef Wellington layers roast beef, foie gras truffle parfait and porcini mushrooms on a grilled baguette, and is the perfect size for a mid-day meal.
Considering we’ve already been back twice to try other menu favourites, the pulled pork sandwich ($10) and the ratatouille panino ($8), the only thing we’re wondering is:
How long until our new favourite lunch spot becomes the busiest one on the block?
