The Open Sea Shanty
fish and chipsVancouver
(Oct.02.07)
Richmond and Steveston may have bragging rights to the best dim sum on the planet, the most random toonie store this side of the Pacific, and the River Rock casino (who doesn’t love a good ol’ game of cards?), but fish and chips?
Not since Sea Shanty opened up nary a hop and a skip south of Kits Beach. This mom-and-pop joint, sister to locations in North Delta and Seattle, feels like an unassuming English diner (complete with a busy watering hole across the street).
We dove right into the Fish Combo ($11.95), featuring one piece each of cod and halibut. The homemade batter and freshly cut chips (also called fries—but hey, when in Rome…) were supremely satisfying, and when we found out that the fish could be fried, steamed, or grilled, we ordered another piece of cod ($6.95) and a side of Mushy Peas ($1.50).
With full stomachs and a teensy bill, we know one thing for sure: We’re glad we don’t have to drive out to Steveston anymore for our fill of fish ‘n chips.
