Mumbi and More

Spicy food in cold weather: A no-brainer. (We’ll admit we never really understood why it often originates from hot countries.) But the inner-struggle starts when we think about driving in the rain all the way to Mahek, the best Indian restaurant in Surrey.
Thankfully, we can now get our tikkas and tandooris on this side of the Pattullo Bridge. While the second, very cozy Mahek—soon to be renamed Café Mumbi—is filling a technically cursed space (the last eatery in its location only lasted a year), it has been buzzing not once, not twice, but all five times we’ve been there.
Not surprising, after a bite of the Lamb Vindallo ($12.95)—spelled that way to reflect the dish’s Goan and Portuguese origins. We’re also fans of the Butter Chicken ($12.95) sopped up with Naan ($1.50), and the Palak Paneer ($10.95), a delicious blend of spinach, spices, and home made cottage cheese. And when we’re feeling wary of all those fiery flavours, we simply add Raita ($3.95), a cooling, fresh yogurt mixed with cucumber and carrots. It’s a delicious no-brainer.
