Movie Theatres

best of movie theatresCalgary (Mar.05.07)

Is there a more anticipated moment than the second the lights go out at the movie theater and the onslaught of pre-trailer commercials begin? Okay, there may be, but a perfectly buttered bag of popcorn and deliciously crafted romantic comedy (starring George Clooney or Hugh Grant) comes close. So sit back, relax and let us guide you through the Friday night ventures with this week’s Best Of movie theatres list...
    The Plaza
  1. Best deal: Canyon Meadows Cinemas
    13226 MacLeod Tr. S.E.; 403-670-5444
At $5 regular fare and $3 matinees, plus incredibly reasonable snack bar prices, a movie date for two with plenty of finger-licking goodies is easily accommodated for less than $20. Bring on the back-row canoodling!

  2. State of the art: Paramount Chinook
    6455 MacLeod Tr. S.W.; 403-212-8994
With Stadium seating, unbeatable surround sound, nearly 20 giant theatres, an IMAX screen, and most importantly, extremely comfortable seats for delicate tushes, this movie-lovers' paradise is even replete with a chic yogurt bar and an endless slew of mouthwatering vendors for every palette.

  3. Old-School charm: The Plaza
    1133 Kensington Rd. N.W.; 403-283-3636
This more than 50-year-old theatre speaks to old-world glamour gals, taking us back to a time before White Chicks became part of our everyday lexicon. Complete with a stage, red velvet curtain, Admit One stubs and interesting movies on just one screen, this movie house boasts enough charm for even the most jaded urban sophisticate.

  4. Independent spirit: The Uptown Stage and Screen
    612-8th Ave. S.W.; 403-265-0120
A movie night should sometimes (we said sometimes) be an intellectual organization of like minds. If you echo that sentiment, there is no other like the Uptown. With a constant rotation of independent, foreign and critically-acclaimed fare, you just might flex more than your popcorn-snatching fingers.

  5. Best popcorn: The Globe
    617-8 Ave. S.W.; 403-262-3308
A movie isn’t a movie without the fluffy stuff. For those discerning palettes, there isn’t any better than at the Globe. Not sure how the little popcorn leprechauns do it, but theirs is the lightest, tastiest popcorn ever to grace our pouty mouth. Possibly the real butter? Our bet is on the little leprechauns. Magically delicious.
