Verdun: Vegan Homeland

cafeMontreal (Jan.17.06)

My kingdom for a vegan restaurant! Can anyone find a fully-operational, all-vegan restaurant in Montreal? (Yes, we know about Au Vivre, the city’s flagship vegan eatery, but it’s currently closed, in the process of moving.) So, what’s a vegan to do? Head to Verdun. Café Blue Monday just opened on Wellington Street—an unexpected part of town that’s flagged as the next Plateau.

Blue Monday offers meatless, non-dairy food at great prices. Witness the dahl ($3), made with organic lentils, the chickpea curry ($4.85), and the festive black bean salad. Designer sandwiches are show-stoppers, as is the potato salad, featuring homemade soy mayo. The beet salad is particularly yummy, mixed with quinoa and a splash of something tangy.

People with nut allergies will be delighted by the pesto. It’s nut-free, made with sunflower seeds, while there are also nut-free brownies for dessert. (They’ll erase all memory of your New Year’s diet.)

Café Blue Monday attracts an arty crowd, so bring your alternative newspaper or Lonely Planet travel guides. It’s cozy, with couches and a community bulletin board.

What’s the most unexpected vegan find at Blue Monday? The weekend brunch. (Brunch is not exactly synonymous with vegan cuisine.) For only $5.95, you’ll find organic toast, fruit crepes and much more.
